Suddenly the CAA law has started being discussed all over the country, the reason for this is that today our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has implemented the Citizenship Amendment Act before the elections in the whole country. Although this act was passed in December 2019 and it also got approval from the President, but it could not be implemented due to protests from different parts of the country.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF CAA LAW?

The Citizenship Amendment Act is a way for Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian and Parsi refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to acquire Indian citizenship.

The main objective of this Act is to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims who are facing religious persecution in these three countries and wish to leave those countries and come to India.

Home Minister Amit Shah's views on CAA

Amit Shah posted on his x account about this act and wrote, "The Modi government today notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. These rules will now enable minorities persecuted on religious grounds in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to obtain citizenship in our country. With this notification, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has fulfilled another commitment and fulfilled the promise of our Constitution makers to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians living in those countries."

when was caa law passed

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act was proposed in the Indian Parliament in December 2019 and was passed on 11 December 2019, although it was approved by the President on 12 December. When it was proposed in the Parliament House, 125 votes were in favor while 105 votes were against it, due to which the CAA law was passed.

When this proposal was placed in the Parliament, it was CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill) and when it later got the President's approval, it became the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Is CAA law anti-Muslim?

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act provides Indian citizenship to people belonging to specific religious minority communities (Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, Buddhists and Parsis) from three Muslim countries neighboring India to protect them from persecution. However, it is being opposed in many places in India that this law is anti-Muslim and Muslims have not been included in it.

Why Muslims were not included in CAA law

The reason for not including Muslims in this Act was given by India's Home Minister Amit Shah that in all these three countries, the Muslim community is in majority due to which they have to face religious persecution while people of other communities have to face persecution there due to which their numbers are decreasing further.

Who will benefit from CAA law?

Under the CAA law, only the central government has the right to grant Indian citizenship. Under this act, refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh can get citizenship.

caa protests

However, let us tell you that under this Act, Indian citizenship will be given only to those people who have come and settled in India before 31 December 2014. Among them, many are legal people who have come with their documents and many have come without documents as well, so that they could get Indian citizenship till now. Keeping this in view, CAA law was implemented so that these refugees can also be provided Indian citizenship.
